Eighty-four lines made Others the second-largest heading in the catalogue. The name understates it. This was not an overflow bin — it was the general engineering consumables line, and it contains the parts that keep rotating machinery turning: bushes, couplings, gears, wheels, friction material, rubber sections, adhesive and grease.

Bushes and couplings

Bushes appeared as three separate lines, plus a bush coupling and a coupling tyre. A bush is a plain bearing — a sacrificial sleeve between a shaft and a housing, designed to wear so that the expensive parts do not. It is one of the few components in a plant that is meant to be consumed, and a bush that shows no wear at overhaul usually means the load is going somewhere it should not.

Couplings connect two shafts and, more importantly, accommodate the fact that they are never perfectly aligned. A flexible coupling absorbs residual angular, parallel and axial misalignment and damps torsional shock between a motor and its load. The coupling tyre is the elastomeric element inside one — a wear item replaced without disturbing the shafts, which is exactly why that coupling type is chosen on machines that must come back into service quickly.

Gears

Bevel gears and spurs were carried as stock lines. A spur gear transmits between parallel shafts and is the simplest, cheapest and noisiest arrangement. A bevel gear transmits between intersecting shafts, usually at a right angle, and is the standard way of turning a drive through ninety degrees without a gearbox. Gear hob cutters — the tooling used to cut gear teeth — sat under Tools, which suggests customers who repaired and re-cut gears as well as replacing them.

Wheels and friction material

Caster wheels and brake liner cover movement and its opposite. Caster selection is a load and floor-surface problem: a hard wheel rolls easily on smooth concrete and transmits every joint and crack as shock into the load, while a soft wheel absorbs the floor and takes far more effort to move. Getting it wrong is the difference between a trolley one person can push and one nobody uses.

Brake liner is friction material for industrial brakes — hoists, winches, mill drives, machine brakes. It is a wear component with a defined minimum thickness, and it is one of the few items in this heading whose failure is a safety event rather than a production one, which puts it in the same class as the lifting equipment in Pulling Support.

Rubber, polymer and carbon

Hard rubber section, EPDM, foam sheet and carbon made up the materials group.

EPDM is the standard sealing elastomer for weather, water, steam and outdoor exposure. It resists ozone and ultraviolet extremely well, which is why it is used for external gaskets and roofing, and it has one decisive incompatibility: it swells badly in mineral oil. An EPDM seal fitted to an oil duty fails quickly, and the equivalent nitrile seal fitted to a steam or outdoor duty fails just as quickly the other way. Substituting one for the other on colour alone is a common and expensive error.

Hard rubber section is extruded profile used for sealing, edging, buffering and anti-vibration mounting. Material designations and the test methods that distinguish one elastomer from another are published by ASTM International — the practical reason a seal should be specified by compound rather than bought by appearance.

Carbon in this context is carbon and graphite components — brushes, mechanical seal faces and bearing elements — used where a self-lubricating, high-temperature or electrically conductive material is required. It connects to the expanded graphite products in Safety and the graphitized gland packing in Pipes & Pipes Fitting.

Adhesive and grease

Adhesive and grease were both carried here and are both consumables of the highest turnover. Grease is oil held in a soap thickener so that it stays where it is put, which is what makes it right for bearings that cannot be flood-lubricated. Its two failure modes are worth knowing: greases with incompatible thickeners can separate when mixed, so a bearing changed to a different product should be purged rather than topped up, and over-greasing a sealed bearing generates heat and blows the seal, which is a more common cause of bearing failure than under-greasing.

What the heading tells you

Eighty-four lines of bushes, couplings, gears, wheels, rubber and grease is the profile of a supplier serving maintenance rather than construction. None of these items goes into a new installation as a distinguishing choice; every one of them is bought because something in service has worn out and the plant needs it back by the morning shift.
